Internet IRL Challenge piece

This was my entry for the Internet IRL challenge. It was a lot more cynical than other entries but I really wanted to put my own spin on it. The challenge was to chose any social media platform and show how it would look if it was a person or place.

In this piece, Instagram is being represented as a corporate man that has power over society through the most trivial of things i.e. when we take pictures of our food and share it. The zombie represents us and how we are almost a slave to social media a mere puppet to these big corporate heads. We are becoming more and more lifeless the more we use social media. With the increase in our use of social media the more powerful these corporate "gods" become and the more dependent we are on it. Displaying the corporate man in this dramatized way I was trying to emphasise the power that these companies wield over us as a society.

I wanted to use the colours from the Instagram logo prominently in this piece (the corporate mans eyes are even little Instagram logos and the zombie has little hashtags for eyes) I liked adding subtle details like that as well as more obvious ones like the hashtags in the background.

I am still new to painting digitally and so far I am really enjoying it.

I decided to take part in an "Untraditional Art" challenge, the rules were to use untraditional tools to create something of your choosing. I chose to use some old makeup I had lying around to try and 'paint' a portrait of a character from one of my favourite movies - Leon the Professional.

I used eyeliner to rough out  some quick construction lines, the eyeliner pencil I was using was very thick so I had to limit how much I could use.

I used makeup brushes to fill the face and neck with foundation. Lipstick and lip pencil to do the lips. Areas that had smudged I used a nail tool to scratch the product away. This was quite a messy piece to try to create but I really enjoyed doing something weirder than normal.

If I was to do this piece again I would find a lighter construction eyeliner pencil so I could be more precise with the placements of the facial features. I would also not be as heavy handed with the eyeliner pencil and liquid eyeliner so the piece wouldn't be as dark
